How to Choose Your Baby's First Walker Shoes: A Soft-Sole Guide

Those first wobbly steps are a big milestone, and the right shoes help rather than hinder them. The guidance from paediatric specialists is refreshingly simple: for early standing and cruising, bare feet and soft, flexible shoes are best, and shoes are really there to protect little feet once your baby is walking outdoors. Here is what to look for.
Barefoot first, shoes for protection
Before your baby walks confidently outside, bare feet (or grippy socks indoors) let the foot and ankle muscles develop naturally and help your baby sense the ground, which builds balance and confidence. Save proper shoes for outdoor walks, nursery and busy places where little feet need protection.
What makes a good first-walker shoe
- Soft, flexible sole: a thin sole (around 2–5 mm) that lets your baby feel the ground. A good test — the whole shoe should fold easily in half.
- Wide toe box: baby toes need room to spread. Avoid narrow shoes that squeeze developing feet.
- Room to grow: leave roughly one finger's width (about 0.8–1 cm) between the longest toe and the front of the shoe.
- Secure but gentle fastening: an easy strap keeps the shoe on without restricting the ankle.
- Breathable, natural materials: genuine leather lets little feet breathe.
What to avoid
Skip thick, rigid soles that block natural movement and ground feel, stiff high-tops that restrict the ankle, and anything too narrow. First shoes should feel close to barefoot, not like tiny boots.
Getting the size right
Babies' feet grow fast, so check the fit every few weeks. Measure foot length and add a little growing room rather than buying big. Our baby shoes are made in EU sizes — see the Shoplaa size guide for the foot-length chart.
Shop handmade baby shoes
Our handmade soft-sole baby shoes are made from genuine leather with flexible soles and room for little toes to move — soft enough for first steps, sweet enough to gift. The Green Unisex Baby Sneaker Booties and Teddy Bear Baby Sneakers are the flexible everyday options; for genuine leather booties look at the Bunny Leather Booties or the Green Birds Booties. For cold weather there are non-slip winter baby boots.
Every baby develops at their own pace; if you have concerns about your child's feet or walking, speak to your health visitor or GP.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does a baby need their first walker shoes?
Shoes are only needed once your baby is walking outdoors and needs protection from the ground. Before that, bare feet indoors or grippy socks help the foot and ankle muscles develop naturally.
How flexible should a first-walker sole be?
Thin and very flexible, roughly 2-5 mm. A good test is to hold the shoe at both ends: it should fold easily in half. Thick rigid soles block the ground feel a baby needs for balance.
How much growing room should I leave?
About one finger's width, roughly 0.8-1 cm, between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. Baby feet grow fast, so re-check the fit every few weeks rather than buying a size up.
Are soft-sole shoes suitable for outdoor walking?
Soft soles are ideal for early walking and smooth surfaces. For rougher ground or cold weather, a slightly more protective sole such as a non-slip winter boot is a better fit.
